Ah, gumption, yes! Always makes me think of the scene in The Holiday when Iris finally has enough of Jasper: "What has exactly got into you?" "I don't know, but I think what I've got is something slightly resembling gumption!"
You've got it in buckets, Caroline—happy birthday, may it be a year filled with wonderful experiences x
thank you for your „birthday musings“, tarot included.. I might not always be able to fully appreciate the latter, but find them fascinating and always worth reading... and, last but not least: happy birthday! xo, Anna from Vienna (Austria) (I‘ve been a follower since you first started on cup of joe, loved following you along and do hope your „musings“ will stay open to all for a while yet, as my small pension will prevent me from moving to a paid subscription:) PS my daughter is turning 38 in April and seems to be struggling more.. it’s difficult for some women to approach 40... I will certainly pass on this newsletter to her as it contains so many wise points💕
Thank you so much, Anna! I appreciate this very kind note. My dream in including the tarot was to help others see that there is so much to it beyond its reputation for "fortunetelling" — as a source for art and symbolism and creativity and conversation. So if it fascinates you, that is all I could ask for! I'm very glad you're reading. And I plan to keep this space running for as long as I can! 💛 Sending warm wishes to you (and your daughter)!
Happy Birthday fellow Aries! I've been a fan of your writing since you wrote for COJ. You have so much wisdom and share it in such a friendly and accessible way. This really resonates with me: "Trust that life unfolds in seasons. If you look closely, inside every flower is the winter that came before it." I had an incredibly difficult fall/winter with a lot of changes and trusting the process and sometimes, just weathering the hard days. And now in spring, I am feeling better and more rooted than ever. And I know that wouldn't have been possible without all that struggle. <3
Happy Birthday, Caroline! And thank you for all your musing, your tarot cards, your wisdom and your beautiful voice. May 39 be everything YOU want it to be x
I love your tarot writing, they’ve helped me find the practice more accessible, and fun! I particularly appreciated your book recs on where to begin. I might not be doing it totally correctly, but it’s now a practice I use for self-reflection to ultimately know myself better, so thanks!
Oh, I love to hear about people's tarot practices. So glad the writing and book recs have been helpful. I'd say there's no way to do it correctly (or incorrectly) as long as it works for you — and it sounds like it is!
This piece is absolutely phenomenal 👏😍 especially the card at the end...and number 4 and 29! So blown away by so much wisdom, generosity of soul and heart in such a young life ✨✨✨ Never, ever stop writing ♥️
A fabulous post (as always), may your birthday bring you even more gumption than you already have (if that's possible) and plenty of cake to wash it down with. As someone about to tick over from 39 to 40 I have to say that even though things rarely went quite to plan, my 39th year has been the one that convinced me that things truly do just get better as you get older (or as one of my favourite runners says "things never always get worse!").
Thank you, Rebecca! I’m glad to hear that’s been your experience. The only part I find strange about growing older is the changing number itself — otherwise I agree, things just get better! Aging is really due for a rebrand.

I learned the word gumption from that movie scene 😄
Thank you, Madeleine! ❤️

Thank you so much, Niki. ❤️ (just seeing this beautiful comment today, hence the weeks-later reply, but better late than never!)
Of course! 🥰✨
Thank you! I love your tarot musings, they have taught me so much, especially and specially the intention of you sharing them! And happy birthday 💙
I can already foresee 39 future columns of yours, extending each short observation to a full exploratory delving.
Bring it on!
Thanks, Thomas! (That’s a wonderful idea... one I will surely remember the next time I feel short on topics.)
