"We all walk unseen in the margins of other people’s stories, the ripples of our efforts extending farther than we know." - wow, just wow. I'm writing this out and having it on my desk. Your newsletters are always the highlight of my week, but this one truly blew me away.
I love reading every week, but this one held particular weight. My husband is a teacher and I’m a healthcare worker, and as people who have dedicated our lives in service of others, we often feel undervalued and burned out. This gave me so much peace. Thank you.
Thank you, Corey. Teachers and healthcare workers are some of my favorite people (in my own life and in the world at large). It means a lot to hear this offered you some peace.
Thank you for this card meditation. I am preparing to move across the country; from the comfort of the Midwest to the coast on the West. I pulled this card a few days ago in a panic about how the move would turn out. This helped to remind me that there was a point in my life where I never thought moving away from my home state was even a consideration. I've come so far and healed so much. I'll carry this message with me :)
Thank you for this, Caroline. What a beautiful post and maybe my favorite so far. It gave me a lot to think about and connect to around Mother’s Day. So much of this post reminds me of my mother. My mother was my best friend and an invisible person in her life, always serving others, always stepping back to let others shine. An educator. A maker. And then a ghost before her time. Now I feel her ghost every day in the way that I teach, talk, do my invisible works, raise my own children. It makes me happy to pass on her kind and gentle spirit to others.
A fascinating read, which resonated with me. You’ve raised some interesting points to ponder, about those who work hard but may not be “seen” or acknowledged.
You are a very talented writer Caroline, very articulate.
The idea that we are all ghosts in one sense echoes throughout my mind clearly. In one sense we carry forward the DNA of our ancestors so that in a sense their spirits live again through us. We inherit their talents in writing, commerce, self employment or mechanics. Others near to us see resemblances to our parents or grandparents in us. We even have the same propensities toward athleticism on one hand and disease on the other.
What we do in our lives also elicits the spirits of others in that nothing creative or mechanical is truly original but the redevelopment of the thoughts and actions of those who came before us. A sci-fi writer such as H. G. Wells or Michael Bishop, although each develop stories that have unique words and phrasings with intriguing details, essentially borrow from the past to birth their own work. “There is nothing new under the sun.”
Likewise with physics, cars and philosophy (all of which are tied together anyway).
