I’m not sure how you do it each week, but your writing touches a small place, a part of me and my thoughts and you do it in such an intricate, captivating, therapy like way that it feels like a warm comforting hug from a good friend. the tarot at the end also touches my mystical heart as well, and the way you describe the card too is so spot on. Thank you from my whole heart 🫶
Caroline, I am in your corner applauding you! You never cease to amaze me. YOU DO YOU! I sense that very often when people react a certain way they do so out of their own fear. It's a projection of their own fear. I try very hard in not letting others define me. VIVE LA DIFFÉRENCE! I loved what you said about anxiety. As you said today and as I said in a previous comment THOUGHTS ARE NOT FACTS Thank you so much for everything you do!
Thank you, Yvonne! You're very right about certain reactions stemming from fear. After I sent this newsletter, my friend told me a story about something she learned in training for becoming a coach:
When you put a bunch of crabs in a bucket, some will inevitably try to escape. But if one gets close to the top, the others will reach up and pull it back in. And it is much the same with humans. One thing is not better than the other, per se, and there are lots of versions of fulfillment. But we don't like to see others doing things we are afraid of, because that means it IS possible, and then we are left to confront that our own fear might be what is holding us back. I hadn't heard it before, but it really resonated with me!
Judgment in the form of a question, indeed. I also wonder if there might be something about bodily autonomy wrapped up in there. At a societal level, we seem uncomfortable with females having agency over their bodies. (I’ve heard many subtle-judgment questions around pregnancy, breastfeeding, etc.)
Anyway, Good luck, Caroline!! My first born son was born in Brooklyn on NYC marathon day (2019)! We will be cheering you on in spirit! :)
YES! Without a doubt. It's always delivered in the same tone as when someone questions a choice around some bodily function — eating or drinking or even wearing something. Mostly curious, but with a hint of judgment... and about something so personal and individual they could never hope to understand. (I'm not saying it never happens, but I have yet to witness someone casually question what a man does or doesn't consume/wear/etc.)
I love that your first son was born on marathon day! (Scorpio? 😊)
yes! I also wonder if there's sometimes a bit of defensiveness tied into these type of "question judgements." Well, I could never stop drinking or quit sugar or run a marathon, and I feel (on some level) bad about it, so now I'm going to judge the person doing it so I can continue to feel okay about myself??? But, you're totally right, everyone feels SO COMFORTABLE judging women but judging men gives people more pause. Men are protected.
And yes! He's a Scorpio just like me :) Are you a Scorpio too? I've always been proud to be one. And also, I am thankful my Virgo husband and Gemini second born son bring a little balance to our family. ha!
I love reading what you write.. it makes me think deeper, it makes me feel better because I realize that I am not alone. Thank you and thank you, Simona
Was just asking myself why people regularly comment on my parenting… and how my choices inconvenience them… aaah humans! (BTW - I have wanted to do the marathon since I saw the movie Brittany runs a marathon… I am working my way to starting to run… if you have any tips on how to get started, apart from “begin” - LOL, please share! I walk every day but I want to increase cardio… just scared to hurt myself!) Also - have you watched the latest BB Netflix special? Did you enjoy it? Lots of questions today! Anyway - have an amazing marathon- go girl! It’s an awesome goal, for all the reasons. Ps- I’d like a parade thrown in my honor! That’s great reason!
How do you know exactly what my brain needs every week? Just downloaded Strava because I want to train for a half...then spent 20 minutes trying to figure out how to re-set all the privacy stuff so that only I can see what I'm doing. For this exact reason. I have no race date, it's not an "official" thing, just for me. For a multitude of reasons, but they are mine and mine alone and I don't need a barrage of "why"s.
I'll be cheering you on in November, in awe of what you're doing, no matter why.
And thank you, once again, for this most wonderful weekly piece that I wait to open until I truly have time to savour it.
As someone who's also training for the NYC marathon this year, this couldn't have been more timely! To hear from someone else who's taking on this daunting task while managing outside opinions offered a little slice of comfort.
I've gotten that once or a couple times. First of all--what kind of person even asks that question? Like, what's it to them? But I strongly agree with Yvonne in her comment down below that it's a just projection of other's fear. Your running marathons is amazing--it's a nice reminder to just go for what you want (no matter other's reactions, hmm), and I certainly needed to hear it.
I'm planning to jump off the city's rallest building this November. Yup. For real.
I was going to do it last year, only lifewas complete chaos after 'he' finally moved out and it was all I could do to process through each day and survive in my new found freedom.
I'm planning to abseil down the tallest building in the city (actually, I think there might be a taller two or three now, LOL).
"Are you crazy? Why would you want to do something like that?!" On repeat, this is what I hear.
My response, "To eaise money for X charity. Wanna sponsor me?!"
"we can only ever see things from our limited point-of-view."
Yup. And who knew soooo many folks are terrified of heights? I'm not. I'm probably part mountain goat!
I looked up the opposite of anxiety and it seems many psych's say "trust". Trust comes from awareness, me thinks.
Thanks, Caroline. Another perfectly timed pondering.🥰
Rusty, that's amazing! (For what it's worth, I'm one of those people who's terrified of heights, but if anything, that only makes me think it's even more incredible.) It helps make a difference in the world AND it makes you feel alive — what could be better than that?
And I love that trust is the opposite of anxiety. Even the word 'trust' has a calming effect, though it can sometimes be hard to practice.
To all of this I say ... I’m impressed you go for it ... all of it... love the cards ... when you have the time ... could you recommend a book about the cards ... it fascinates me. Thank you, you make my Sunday evening lead into a nice start of the week.
Wishing you the best in this admirable endeavor! I've run a couple and you're right...people have to give their 2 cents. Luckily, I ran them before the onslaught of social media etc 😄

Joanna, YES !YES! I feel the same way.
Me too!

Gosh, I love your writing. I'm training for a marathon because I hate running. It's the biggest mental challenge I can think of (for me).

I'm so excited to hear this! Wishing you the best throughout your training and on November 6th! Maybe we'll cross paths. :)
