I lost my dog on Sunday as well. It has been crushing. We had one night in our new home. I am in the same space of you having something really great happening, and losing Obi unexpectedly. One step at a time. I have listened to pet loss podcasts that have been really helpful. Hope you are checking those out too.

Big hugs ... for the very personal loss and the global pain ...

I happened to read Hattie Chrisell's piece right before yours and it does a great job of articulating thoughts about when there are no words around loss. You might resonate: https://inwriting.substack.com/p/on-love-loss-and-a-third-thing

I’m no good at notes of condolence, but I do deeply recognize that deep mind-numbing fog of grief. Wishing you peace and comfort.

Oh, Caroline!

I. Am. So. Sorry.

I lost my girl of 11 years and 3 days last year, with only 3 days' notice than anything was wrong.

It's HARRRRRRRRDDDD!!!!!

I literally just lit a candle for you and I'm sending you love and healing.

You can do hard things and you will get through this awfulness.

Remember: Grief is what happens when you have love that has nowhere to go.

With love,

Rusty. ❤

I'm so very sorry for your loss, Caroline. I had to say goodbye to my silly boy Oliver this summer after twelve years; when they've been with you that long of a time, it's hard to imagine life without them. I hope you can find comfort in the memories you have with your Mia ♥️

Oh Caroline I am so so sorry to hear about dear Mia. She was a phenomenal dog and I always loved reading about her and seeing her picture pop up in a post. Such a beauty and a character. Thinking of you and sending much love.

This isn't exactly the right quote, but when my dog died I took a lot of comfort in reading Ann Patchett's essays about her dog in "This is the Story of a Happy Marriage" - she gets it: 'Sometimes love does not have the most honorable beginnings, and the endings, the endings will break you in half. It’s everything in between we live for.'

I am so sorry, Caroline. She meant so much to you and I can’t imagine how much your heart hurts. There is nothing like the love of a dog to keep us sane in this cruel world. Sending a big old hug ❤️

So sorry for your loss, Caroline. Our animals have a way of seeing and nurturing the deepest parts of us. There's already so much darkness and navigating it is even harder when you lose one of your lights. I hope you are able to find peace — and have that same hope for our world right now.
